Amazon Closing All 72 Amazon Fresh & Amazon Go Supermarkets, Focusing on Online Delivery, Whole Foods Market

Online retail juggernaut Amazon announced this week that they will be closing all 72 of their Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go brick-and-mortar supermarkets almost immediately, including two locations on Long Island.
Currently, Amazon runs 57 Amazon Fresh stores and 15 Amazon Go stores. Amazon noted that nearly all of the stores will be shuttered by February 1, except for locations in California, which – according to a state labor notification law – are required to give employees 45 days notice.
The company noted that the move comes amid a drive to focus their efforts on online grocery delivery – which has seen a significant boost in popularity in recent years – as well as their very successful Whole Foods Market supermarket chain; some closing Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores will be converted into Whole Foods locations, Amazon reps said.
“While we’ve seen encouraging signals in our Amazon‑branded physical grocery stores, we haven’t yet created a truly distinctive customer experience with the right economic model needed for large-scale expansion,” Amazon announced in a blog post. “After a careful evaluation, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores, converting various locations into Whole Foods Market stores.”
The closures include two Amazon Fresh locations on Long Island – East Setauket, which originally opened in October 2024, and Oceanside, which opened in 2022. A previous Amazon Fresh supermarket in Plainview closed in the summer of 2025 after less than a year in business.
