Joey Chestnut claimed his 16th Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest championship on Coney Island this Independence Day, following a rain delay that almost resulted in the event being cancelled.

After an initial announcement that the contest had been cancelled due to lightning, the ode to gluttony was back on at 2 p.m., at which time Chestnut, 39, crammed an incredible 62 hotdogs and buns down his gullet in just ten minutes, 14 more than the second-place winner.

The commanding win represented Chestnut’s eighth straight in a row, and his 16th overall.

The women’s contest was won by Miki Sudo, 37, who managed to eat 39.5 hot dogs in ten minutes.

Both Chestnut and Sudo said they will defend their titles in 2024.
