Hallockville Museum Farm Fleece and Fiber Festival, Saturday, May 20

Share

The North Fork’s authentic farm homestead, Hallockville Museum Farm in Riverhead, will host its annual Fleece and Fiber Festival on Saturday, May 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Rain date Sunday, May 21.)

The Hallockville Fleece and Fiber Festival is an immersive experience in the life cycle of fiber, from sheep to sweater. The festival will feature dozens of fiber artisans showcasing their talents, demonstrating their traditional crafts and selling their creations, along with hands-on demonstrations for visitors.

“We’re proud to host one of the largest and most fun fiber arts and crafts fairs on Long Island,” said Hallockville Museum Farm Executive Director Roberta Shoten. “As a museum, we want to also communicate the historic and cultural significance of fiber arts in the lives of our Long Island ancestors. Families such as the Hallocks raised sheep and spun wool, they created quilts, made baskets and practiced other fiber crafts in order to create essential elements for daily living.”

Fleece and Fiber Festival Activities

Among the exhibitors and vendors at the Hallockville Fleece and Fiber Festival will be live sheep shearing by Tabbethia Haubold-Magee of Long Island Yarn and Farm. Visitors to the festival may watch as spinners transform raw fiber into yarn, weavers create cloth, quilters create colorful masterpieces, basket weavers turn raw materials into practical vessels, and also view rug-hooking, knitting, crocheting, needlework and woodworking demonstrations.

More than two-dozen vendors will be onsite selling handmade items. Docents will lead special fiber-oriented tours of Hallock Homestead, a preserved 18th century farmhouse listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. New this year will be a children’s activity area and a petting zoo, and visitors can stop by say “hello” to Hallockville’s  resident pigs, chickens and cows.

The volunteer Hallockville Bakers will host a taste-tempting sale of homemade items, the proceeds of which will benefit Hallockville Museum Farm. Additional local food and beverages will be offered for sale by Golden Jalapeño food truck and Greenport Brewery.
