The first Amazon Fresh store opened on Long Island this month. The 47,000-square-foot new store is in a former Waldbaums location. According to a story in Supermarket News, Amazon Fresh has 39 stores in eight states and the District of Columbia in the U.S.
“That’s more than double the 14 locations that Amazon Fresh had about a year earlier,” the article says.
Featuring “Just Walk Out” tech to provide cashierless checkout, this location is Amazon’s first in New York. According to Amazon, Just Walk Out technology uses a combination of sophisticated technologies to determine “who took what” from the store.
“When a shopper takes something off the shelf, it’s added to their virtual cart,” their technology website explains. “When the shopper puts the item back on the shelf, it comes out of their virtual cart. After they leave the store, they’re charged for the items they left the store with.”
The technology is not just exclusive to Amazon Fresh stores. It is being marketed to other retailers by Amazon to install in their locations as well.
Amazon is planning two more stores on Long Island, one in East Setauket and another in Plainview.
