In light of the slight uptick of COVID-19 cases in Nassau County recently, County Executive Laura Current has issued the following update in regards to the ongoing pandemic:
Today we are reporting a COVID-19 positivity rate of 1.2%, with 72 residents testing positive out of 5,967. Nassau’s hospitals are reporting 44 COVID-19 patients, with 14 patients in the ICU and 4 on ventilators. Sadly, there has been one new COVID-19 fatality. We expected school reopenings to pose a new challenge, and Nassau remains on high alert with regard to infections at schools and universities. The County Health Department is working closely with the State and hotspot communities to halt any spread of the virus in its tracks, as well as ensure that health and safety guidance is followed. The risk of asymptomatic spread is now higher than it has been in recent months, so it’s imperative we continue to wear our masks.
Long Islanders should draw confidence from what we’ve already achieved together. We went from being the hardest-hit area to leading the way on reopening safely. Newsday recently highlighted our success driving down infection rates in the predominantly minority communities disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, a turnaround unlike any other in the country. We’ve shown that we can defeat this virus when we apply the common sense tools and know-how, and I’m confident we’ll continue to do so.
Lastly, I urge residents to be especially mindful of misinformation and unverified claims circulating on the internet as the Election draws nearer. COVID-19 misinformation has been a clear impediment to our national recovery, and online efforts to divide and distract us are more intense than ever. Let’s continue to stay informed, maintain calm, and remain vigilant.
