In honor of Memorial Day, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran hosted a car parade to recognize those who selflessly lost their lives while fighting for our freedom as well as pay homage to the 75th Anniversary of the end of World War II. The car parade led to the Veterans Memorial at Eisenhower Park where County Executive Curran was joined by the Nassau County Veterans Service Agency and local veterans’ groups for a ceremonial wreath laying in honor of those who lost their lives fighting for America.
“I am honored I was able to host this parade and ceremony to pay tribute to our fallen heroes and commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end World War II. While we were not able to hold a traditional ceremony this year, we must not let Memorial Day be forgotten. It is important for us to properly salute and reflect on those who paid the ultimate sacrifice while defending our precious freedoms,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran.
About 200 cars were in the procession that began at NYCB Live Home of the Nassau County Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The parade led to Eisenhower Park where County Executive Curran hosted a solemn ceremony featuring a wreath laying, a gun salute, Taps, a bagpiper from the Nassau County Police Department Pipe and Drum Band and flag arch by the Westbury and East Meadow Fire Departments. Nassau County veterans involved in the ceremony included Commanders from Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legions as well as members from Vietnam War Veterans Association, AmVets, United Veterans Organization of Nassau County, Disabled American Veterans, among many others. Vehicles from the Museum of American Armor were also on display.
