This May, in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County (CCE Suffolk) unveils a series of programs and educational blog posts dedicated to enhancing mental wellness across various constituencies in the county. These initiatives are part of CCE Suffolk’s broader mission to foster a healthier, more resilient community through education and practical support by emphasizing the critical role mental health plays in achieving overall health and well-being.
“Mental health is as important as physical health to the fabric of our communities,” said Vanessa Lockel, Executive Director of CCE Suffolk. “During Mental Health Awareness Month, we aim not just to raise awareness but to empower our communities with the tools they need to thrive. Our activities align with our longstanding commitment and mission to enhancing the well-being of every individual in Suffolk County.”
Founded in 1917, CCE Suffolk has always played a pivotal role in community education and wellness. As part of the national land grant university system, CCE Suffolk’s initiatives are deeply rooted in research and evidence-based practices. Their programs range from preserving vital local industries such as farming and fishing to strengthening families and individuals.
This Mental Health Awareness Month, CCE Suffolk will focus on addressing the mental health needs of various constituency groups including older adults, children and teens, prenatal and postpartum women, racial and ethnic minority groups, and the LGBTQIA+ community. Each program is tailored to meet the unique challenges these groups face and to promote mental resilience.
In addition to live workshops, CCE Suffolk is rolling out several thought-provoking blog posts throughout the month on a range of mental health topics, providing readers with valuable insights and strategies to improve their daily mental wellness practices.
“We are committed to not only raising awareness but also providing practical, actionable support,” added Lockel. “Our diverse programs this month reflect the agency’s mission of fostering a healthier, more resilient Suffolk County.”
CCE Suffolk encourages county residents to participate in these enriching experiences, learn from experts, and take steps toward personal mental health and wellness.
