Long Island’s Solid Waste Future to Be Discussed at Stony Brook University Forum March 13

Long Island elected officials and solid waste experts will gather Wednesday, March 13th, 2024 at Stony Brook University to address the future of how Long Island will manage its waste in light of the pending closure of the Brookhaven Landfill, increased costs due to regulations, as well as efforts to develop a regional approach for solid waste management.
The event, entitled The 2024 Larry Swanson Long Island Environmental Symposium, is presented by the Evan R. Liblit Memorial Scholarship Committee, which in addition to providing scholarships at Stony Brook hosts events and webinars aimed at improving recycling and solid waste management.
The event will focus on the need for a regional solid waste management plan and will feature a presentation by Suffolk County Executive Edward Romaine on his efforts to facilitate such a plan.
Other topics to be discussed include Long Island’s solid waste infrastructure, economics, and the impact on the future closure of the Brookhaven Landfill on current solid waste practices.
Finally, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office will discuss their “Evergreen Initiative” to stop illegal dumping.
