Legislator Chad Lennon, a major in the United States Marine Corps Reserves and new member of the Suffolk County Legislature, held his first Valentine’s Day Card Drive for veterans and active-duty military members. In a little over a month, Legislator Lennon’s office was able to collect over 3,000 Valentine cards.
Cards were received throughout the 6th Legislative District, with participants from Rocky Point School District, Miller Place School District, Longwood School District, Shoreham-Wading River School District, Girl Scout Troops from Units 4 and 54, local preschools, youth groups, community groups and local businesses. In addition, Girl Scout Troops 4, 491, 1455 and 2752 donated Girl Scout cookies to be sent with the cards to active-duty military members.
Legislator Lennon along with his staff worked with Operation Veronica to send 1,100 cards to troops overseas. Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook, Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project, VFW Post 6249 and other veteran support groups in the Town of Brookhaven were the recipients of the remaining Valentine’s Day cards.
“I am taken back and thankful for all the support received for my first ‘Valentine’s Day Card Drive’ from school districts, youth groups, businesses and community groups in the 6th Legislative District.  As a veteran and an active reserve member, I know firsthand the impact and importance of receiving something so simple as a homemade Valentine’s Day card,” said Legislator Lennon.
