Your Mother’s House: Garden City Park Sports Bar and Restaurant Serves Up Equal Parts Food and Fun

Share

If you’re looking for a place to watch the next big sporting event while chowing down on some delicious, high-quality food, Your Mother’s House Is the place to be. No, we don’t mean YOUR mother’s house, dear reader…we mean Your Mother’s House, an independently-owned restaurant and sports bar located at 2349 Jericho Turnpike in Garden City Park that’s well known for serving up equal parts food and fun while catering to both sports fans and families at the same time.

According to the establishment’s owner, Rosy Kaur, Your Mother’s Place was a pre-existing restaurant that had already been open for approximately eight years when she and her business partner purchased it in April of 2019. Initially Kaur entertained the idea of rebranding the business, but it was decided that its existing moniker was catchy and retained it.

“We had plans to change the name, but we liked it and we decided to stick with it,” she said. “It’s an unusual and eye-catching name.”

What sets Your Mother’s House apart from other eateries on Long Island, Kaur said, is that it’s not only a restaurant that serves a wide variety of great food, but it’s also one of the largest sports bars in the region, with an audio/visual presentation for watching televised events that truly immerses you in the game.

“We have a 270-inch projector screen which we use for sporting events, so we feature football every week on there, and we’re also big on UFC fights…those go over very well here,” she said.

Your Mother’s House has the room to really pack customers in on busy nights as well, with a seating capacity that can accommodate up to 307 patrons comfortably.

Surprisingly enough, Kaur said that she doesn’t have a background in the restaurant business, begging the question as to why she was interested in investing in an eatery; however, she noted that the challenge of doing something new intrigued her, and she jumped in to the endeavor with both feet, determined to make it a success.

“This was a big change for my business partner Ron Neill and I. In the past we had some fast food experience, but not like a full-on restaurant,” she said. “Initially we were looking for a venue where we could hold one-night events, and then we came across Your Mother’s Place and we thought that it was big enough for that. However, the fact that it was also a restaurant gave us an opportunity to make additional money during the week when not hosting events. We thought that was a great idea that it was an establishment that we could use to generate revenue all week long, as opposed to just one night a week.”

However, Kaur and Neill were unprepared for how successful the restaurant and sports bar aspects of the business were going to be, and soon the idea of event hosting being the primary business model for Your Mother’s House soon took a back seat.

“We’re still doing events here and there, but that’s not the priority now,” she said. “Right now, running the restaurant and bar is the priority, and things are really going very well right now in that regard.”

Kaur noted that adjusting to the restaurant business wasn’t easy; however, she said that she and her partner quickly learned from their mistakes. Of course, it didn’t help matters any that they had purchased the establishment the year before COVID-19 took hold of the country, but despite suffering hardships like many other businesses did during the pandemic, Kaur noted that it also allowed them additional time to fine-tune their approach and upgrade the building.

“The pandemic, despite being horrible for everyone, at least allowed us to work on improving our business during the three months we were closed,” she said. “It gave us time to renovate the restaurant and put together a good team, both inside and outside of the kitchen. When we finally came back, we knew that everything was under our control and we had all of the pieces in place to run a successful business.”

Your Mother’s House boasts a diverse menu focusing on classical American foods such as burgers, fries, sandwiches, and other tasty fare. But what really sets the restaurant apart is not only the size and variety of their menu, but a focus on high-quality, fresh ingredients in each and every dish that comes out of their kitchen.

“We have a large menu, and the way it’s designed is that it’s not just bar food, there’s something for everyone here,” she said. “We have burgers, we have appetizers, main entrees such as steaks, and we use the same quality steaks of any steakhouse, even though no one would expect us to do that. We offer better quality than other restaurants…that’s the first thing I changed when I took over the restaurant. For example, the quality of the fish and chicken wasn’t up to my standards, so I found better places to source them from.”

Kaur said that the experience of running Your Mother’s House for the past several years has been an extraordinarily positive one; she finds the restaurant business to be tough yet exciting and satisfying to work in, and the extraordinary feedback she regularly receives from her customers makes the hard work that she puts in more than worth it.

“I really enjoy it, because cooking is my passion and even though I don’t cook here, I designed the menu and the way everything is done,” she said. “It can get overwhelming at times, but when you have a great team like I do, it makes things so much easier. And the customers are very happy when they come here, especially when it comes to the sports bar. It’s a good feeling that people like to come here and eat and celebrate their special events, and I want to extend my appreciation to all of our patrons.”
