New York Has Produced The Most TIME People Of The Year, Study Reveals

Share

This December, TIME Magazine will announce their latest ‘Person Of The Year’. Since the inaugural ceremony in 1927, multiple Americans have received this recognition for their influence on events over the previous year.

But of all the titles given to people from the U.S (52, to be exact) – which states can lay claim to the most? With their own American Gambling Awards ceremony taking place in November, Gambling.com analyzed the birthplaces of every TIME Person Of The Year, and ranked which states have produced the most POTY.

The favorite for this year’s distinction is Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is odds-on to be the first person since Richard Nixon to retain the title.

Two states have produced the most American TIME People Of The YearNew York and Texas share the top of the nationwide leaderboard, with seven titles given to people born in each respective state.

Two Texans have received this annual recognition twice: Dwight D. Eisenhower (1959 & 1944) and Lyndon B. Johnson (1967 & 1964). Whereas New York can boast the only three time Person Of The Year – with Franklin D. Roosevelt achieving editorial immortality in the magazine’s iconic annual issue on three occasions (1941, 1934 & 1932). The Empire State’s most recent POTY was Donald Trump back in 2016.

Pennsylvania completes our podium, in 3rd place. Five Person Of The Year titles have been awarded to people from the Keystone State, including the current U.S. President Joe Biden (2020).

4th position is a four-way tie. California, Connecticut, Georgia and Illinois all share the spot with three People Of The Year distinctions apiece.

Methodology

  • Gambling.com worked out which states have produced the most TIME People Of The Year, based on the birthplace of the American award winners.
  • They used TIMEOpenDataSoft & Mental Floss to gather information on each POTY.
  • After finding the state where each American winner was born – the states themselves were ranked from most to least Person Of The Year titles.
  • All data was collected and correct on November 16th 2023.
