Over Labor Day weekend the New York State Police on Long Island removed 19 intoxicated drivers from the roadways. Two of the intoxicated drivers arrested, had a child in the vehicle which resulted in additional felony charges for Leandra’s Law, which is a charge levied against an individual when they have a B.A.C. (Blood Alcohol Content) of .08 or more, or drives while impaired by drugs and has a child under the age of 16 in the vehicle.
In an effort to reduce collisions Troopers remained vigilant issuing 550 tickets, of which 159 were for speeding.  Over the holiday weekend, Troopers investigated 69 property damage collisions and 17 injury related collisions.  There were zero fatal collisions on the roadways that the Troopers patrol as the primary law enforcement.
On September 1st, in Nassau County, Troopers arrested Emanuel Lindarte-Mujica, 25 of Hempstead, NY for Driving While Intoxicated (Leandra’s Law).  Lindarte-Mujica was driving with an 8-year-old child in the vehicle.  Lindarte-Mujica was also charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
On September 4th, in Suffolk County, Troopers arrested Jose Murillo, 50 of Huntington, NY for Driving While Intoxicated (Leandra’s Law). Murillo was driving with an 8-year-old child in the vehicle.  Murillo was also charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th Degree.
Traffic safety remains a top priority for the State Police and efforts will continue to remove intoxicated drivers from the roadways. Those who choose to put the safety of others at risk through their reckless actions will be targeted, charged, and removed from the roadways when they are located.  Innocent lives lost to intoxicated or drugged driving is 100% preventable and it is the responsibility of all to have a plan to avoid driving while intoxicated or driving while under the influence of drugs.
