Peloton Pedals Back with Recall of 2.2 Million Bikes over Seat Post Safety Concern

Share

Peloton has issued a recall of 2.2 million of its exercise bikes due to a safety concern regarding the seat post. Owners of the affected Peloton model PL01, sold from January 2018 through May 2023, have been advised to “immediately stop using” the bikes until they can be repaired. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall notice stating that Peloton has received 35 reports of the seat post breaking and detaching from the bike during use, which has resulted in 13 injuries such as lacerations, bruises, and a fractured wrist due to falling from the bike.
Consumers are urged to contact Peloton for a free repair and should cease using the recalled exercise bikes until they have been fixed. Peloton has stated that they will provide a free self-installable seat post. Consumers can reach out to Peloton toll-free at 866-679-9129 from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. ET seven days a week, or visit Peloton’s website for more information.
Peloton has clarified that the recall is specific to the original Peloton Bike sold in the United States and does not affect international models or its more recent Bike+ model. However, this is not the first time the company has experienced regulatory issues. In 2021, the CPSC issued a warning to consumers to stop using Peloton’s Tread+ treadmill due to numerous safety incidents, including the death of a child. Earlier this year, Peloton agreed to pay a $19 million fine for failing to report safety issues related to its treadmill.
