Suffolk County Executive Bellone Announces Carmans River Fish Ladder Project Now Complete

Share

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has announced the completion of the Carmans River Fish Ladder Project, the only remaining barrier to fish passage along the Carmans River.
The project at Lily Lake Dam will now allow migratory fish to move safely and effectively across the stream barrier while protecting existing infrastructure to help mitigate flooding.
Fish ladders are created on or around artificial barriers to facilitate the natural migration of fish, which will allow access for alewives and blueback herring, brook trout, and the American eel to swim upstream to spawn, contributing to the growth of the species and the health of the marine environment.
Healthy and abundant fisheries are also important for Long Island’s economy, as this project will help to expand fishing opportunities.
