We did the math to see if 2022 will have a snowy Christmas morning.
It’s every little kid’s dream (and frankly, a lot of adults too). Wake up Christmas morning to find that there is a gentle covering of snow outside. It’s the epitome of Christmas vibes: a white Christmas.
What are the chances of Long Island having a white Christmas this year?
Well, we checked the math and historically, the odds are not in our favor to have snow fall as Santa makes his rounds. That does not mean we can’t have a white Christmas or that we won’t have a white Christmas. It just means that we probably will not.
Even though the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts that the weather will be cooler than average for the northern United States this year, that doesn’t mean there is a greater chance of snow.
The average snowfall on Long Island in December from 1947 through 2016 was 6.76 inches. Not bad. Weatherspark.com says that on December 24, the temperature on Long Island typically ranges from 32°F to 40°F and is rarely below 18°F or above 52°F. There’s a 30% chance that more than 0.04 inches of total precipitation throughout the day. Most of that would be rain if anything. On Christmas Day the numbers are pretty similar.
Winter officially blows in during the winter solstice at exactly 4:48pm EST on December 21, 2022.
NOAA has a map that outlines the possibility of snow falling across the United State on Christmas Day. You can see that the probability is kind of low.
Not to be a Scrooge about it but it seems that snow is not in the forecast for Christmas Day in 2022 but the ghost of Christmas past does not always predict the present and we will just have to wait and see.
