Nassau County Police Arrest Two Men Engaged Street-Level Drug Deal in New Cassel

The Third Squad reports the details of the arrest of two men for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance that occurred on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at 11:30 pm in New Cassel.
According to detectives, Bureau of Special Operation (BSO) officers were on patrol when they observed a narcotics transaction between two subjects located at 765 Prospect Street.
When officers approached defendant Matthew Kovsh, 28, of 728 Division Avenue, Hicksville he had a bag of what appeared to be alprazolam pills in his hand. Defendant Kovsh was placed under arrest without incident.
When officers attempted to place defendant Melquawn Abernathy, 29, of 840 Sharon Lane, Westbury under arrest, the defendant did become violent and combative. Defendant Abernathy was apprehended by officers and placed under arrest.
Defendant Abernathy’s one-year old son was a passenger in the vehicle and was released to a family member.
Subsequent to the investigation defendant Kovsh was found to be in possession of what appeared to be oxycodone. Metal knuckles were found inside of the vehicle and defendant Abernathy was found to be in possession of what appeared to be oxycodone hydrochloride, alprazolam and oxycodone.
Defendant Matthew Kovsh was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 5th Degree and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th Degree. He will be arraigned on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at First District Court, 99 Main Street in Hempstead.
Defendant Melquawn Abernathy was charged with two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd Degree, three counts of Criminal Possession of a controlled substance in the 7th Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd Degree, Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Resisting Arrest. He will be arraigned on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at First District Court, 99 Main Street in Hempstead.
