Miller Place Home Condemned after Officials Find Over 300 Hoarded Animals, Thousands of Roaches

A Miller Place hoarder’s home was officially condemned on Tuesday by the Town of Brookhaven after investigators discovered over 300 animals and tens of thousands of roaches, according to Suffolk District Attorney Ray Tierney.
The nightmarish scene saw 118 rabbits, 150 birds, 15 cats, seven tortoises, three snakes and several mice living in disgusting, filthy conditions – including urine and feces – and countless cockroaches had infected the residence, officials say; many of the animals were also reportedly deprived of essential medical treatment by their owner as well.
Town of Brookhaven Animal Control Officers had contacted DA Tierney’s office on October 1, requesting special animal abuse investigators – dubbed “Operation Open Cage” – to look into the matter after they received numerous complaints about home’s purported town code violations.
The residence has been condemned by the Brookhaven building inspector, who deemed it “deplorable” and “uninhabitable.”
Members of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are currently assisting in removing the animals from the house and getting them treatment.
