Legislator Drucker Announces Third Installment of LD 16’s Remote Internship Program is Underway

Share

Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D – Plainview) proudly announces that the third installment of his office’s Remote Internship Program is underway.

During their internship, students will learn about the relationship between politics and government and the difference between the two; work with legislative staff on constituent issues; create topical content for Legislator Drucker’s social media platforms; host virtual events for District 16 and explore social issues at a County legislative level. A special emphasis is placed on developing planning, problem-solving, and communication skills related to crisis management.

Recent guest speakers have included Michael Pernick, Redistricting Counsel at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF). Mr. Pernick, a former Nassau County Legislature intern, shared career advice, law school guidance, and his recent experiences defending democracy and protecting voters’ rights in Georgia.

Interns also participated in “Mitzvah Monday,” a grassroots initiative in which interns worked alongside community volunteers to schedule COVID-19 vaccination appointments for eligible LD16 residents as vaccine supplies permitted.

“When we reinvented our approach to internships last April at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, my district office staff and I were determined to create an immersive and authentic educational experience that we could deliver in a safe and socially distanced manner,” Legislator Drucker said. “Thanks to their tireless efforts and the support of our local partners in education, students will continue to have an opportunity to explore their passions and gain valuable skills by immersing themselves in the world of local government.”

More than a dozen students from the Plainview-Old Bethpage, Jericho, Roslyn and East Williston School Districts are already enrolled in the internship program, which has a maximum capacity of 40 students. Applications are still being accepted; for additional information, please contact Legislator Drucker’s office at 516-571-6216 or adrucker@nassaucountyny.gov.
