Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Pistol Licensing Operating Under Remote Procedures

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is now processing East End pistol license applications under new remote procedures due to the increased spread of the coronavirus.

Effective December 7, 2020, the Pistol License Bureau is temporarily operating under new procedures to limit the spread of COVID-19 inside the Suffolk County Correctional Facility and Sheriff’s Administrative offices. The Pistol License Bureau and the Fingerprinting ID Units are currently closed to any non-Sheriff’s Office staff. Staff is continuing to process pistol applications under revised procedures. This policy will be updated periodically and reviewed again in the first week of January 2021.

Temporary procedures are in place to enable the public to begin the process to obtain a pistol license:

  1. Download the Pistol License Application Packet.
  2. Once you complete the packet, mail it to:​ Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, Pistol License Bureau, 100 Center Drive South, Riverhead, NY 11901​
  3. Do not send cash or the money order in the mail. Our investigators will advise you when you may drop off these fees.
  4. If you have any questions, or to request an application packet via regular mail, please call us at (631) 852-2233 during standard business hours: Monday-Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The Sheriff’s Office Pistol License Bureau is responsible for the investigation, issuance, and maintenance of all pistol licenses for residents of the five eastern townships (East Hampton, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Southampton, and Southold). The Pistol License Bureau maintains over 5,000 active files and records, and records renewals, handgun transactions, and other correspondence for each active file.

Last March, In order to help control the spread of COVID-19, the processing of pistol licenses was temporarily suspended while new procedures could be put in place to protect the staff and the general public. As the spread of coronavirus increases once again, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to be able to offer pistol license processing without interruption via the above procedures.
