Suffolk Sheriff Toulon Kicks Off Health and Wellness Program for Sheriff’s Office Staff

Share

Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. announced today that he has launched a Health and Wellness Program for Sheriff’s Office employees. The program is coordinated by a committee comprised of 4 correction officers, 4 deputy sheriffs and a civilian who will work with staff to help them achieve their health and fitness goals. The initiative was kicked off on November 1st to coincide with Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in the United States.

The County Sheriff was inspired to create a model program for employees based on his experiences as a two-time cancer survivor and after learning about a similar initiative run by the New York City Police Department. Sheriff Toulon said, “As an employer, I want to make sure that our staff can be as productive as possible, and healthy habits can improve morale, reduce sick-time and even lower health care costs.” He added, “I think we are living in stressful times and I also wanted to show our employees that I care about their health and well-being. After battling cancer twice, I know how important it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle.”

Members of the Health and Wellness Committee share the Sheriff’s mission, and they all bring a unique skill-set to the initiative. Some have expertise in yoga and nutrition, and others can help with weight-room workouts and lead weekend hiking trips for employees.

Sheriff Toulon hopes the Health and Wellness Program will contribute to his goal to make the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office the best law enforcement agency in the country.
