Nassau County Officially Breaks Ground on Detective Luis G. Alvarez Memorial Park, Champion of 9/11 Responders

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran secured legislation to officially change the name of the County’s Terrell Avenue Park in Oceanside to Detective Luis G. Alvarez Memorial Park. After months of working with the family on the park’s new design, Monday, Curran today joined the family to officially break ground on the park’s transformation to mark what would be Detective Alvarez’s 55th birthday.

Retired NYPD Bomb Squad Detective and leading champion for Victim Compensation Benefits Fund, Luis G. Alvarez, passed away after a battle with cancer stemming from his assignment at Ground Zero. Just weeks before his passing, Det. Alvarez, a loving husband and father of three sons and Oceanside resident, delivered a moving and crucial plea in Washington before a House Judiciary subcommittee to replenish the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. This park will serve as a symbol and reminder of his sacrifice and unwavering fight for 9/11 first responders and a tranquil neighborhood space for all to enjoy.

“Alongside the Alvarez family, today we broke ground on the transformation of Detective Luis G. Alvarez Memorial Park in Oceanside,” County Executive Laura Curran said. “I am honored to dedicate this park in his name – to serve as a reminder of his sacrifice, unwavering fight for 9/11 first responders, and a tranquil neighborhood space, designed by his family, for all to enjoy.”
