Kathleen Rice and Laura Curran Renew Call for PSEG Long Island to Provide Bill Credits for Customers

U.S. Representatives Kathleen Rice (NY-04) and Nassau County Executive Laura Curran sent a letter to PSEG Long Island requesting the utility offer customers that experienced power outages lasting more than 48 hours after Tropical Storm Isaias a credit on their monthly utility bills. The letter is a follow-up to an August 9 letter requesting bill credits and reimbursement to customers for spoiled food and medication as a result of the outages.

On August 17, PSEG Long Island announced its plan to reimburse customers for spoiled food and medication. However, its continued inaction regarding bill credits comes as Con Edison, a regional competitor, has already committed to providing bill credits to their customers who faced extended outages.

“Long Islanders who endured the lengthy, unwarranted power outages in the wake of Tropical Storm Isais deserve a credit on their monthly utility bill,” said Rep. Kathleen Rice. “It is wrong to deprive them of this relief, especially during this pandemic when they are faced with economic uncertainty. We appreciate the efforts PSEG Long Island has made to reimburse for food and medication, but its customers will not be made whole until they receive an appropriate credit on their monthly bill as well.”

“PSEG Long Island needs to step up and provide a monthly credit to customers who were adversely affected by Tropical Storm Isaias,” said County Executive Curran. “PSEG agreed to reimburse customers for spoiled food and medication after we asked, but more can and should be done.”
