On Thursday, August 13, 2020, Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. and the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office honored Correction Lieutenant William Berry with a Ceremonial Walk-Out to celebrate his retirement after a long career with the Sheriff’s Office.
Lieutenant Berry retired after nearly 43 years with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. He began his career back in 1977 and was one of the few African American officers serving at the Sheriff’s Office when he started his career in the 1970s.

Lt. Berry has worked at both the Riverhead and Yaphank Facilities as a correction officer, a sergeant, and a lieutenant, as well as serving as the Executive Officer of the Sheriff’s Academy Bureau in Brentwood. He has worked under six administrations, beginning with Sheriff Finnerty in 1977, followed by Sheriff Dooley, Sheriff Mahoney, Sheriff Tisch, Sheriff DeMarco, and finally current Sheriff Toulon.
This occasion was extra special because of Lt. Berry’s long 43 year career with the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Toulon presented Lt. Berry with a proclamation, Correction Officer’s Union President Lou Viscusi spoke and presented him with a gift, and all command staff, as well as a large contingent of correction officers and deputies lined the walkways as Lt. Berry “walked-out” of the building for the final time to the playing of bagpipes.
