U.S. Representative Kathleen Rice (NY-04) has received confirmation from the United States Department of the Treasury that local villages within the Town of Hempstead are able to receive financial assistance out of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding the Town has received to cover COVID-19 related expenses.
The United States Department of the Treasury confirmed directly with Rice’s office that there is no prohibition on local governments disbursing Coronavirus Relief Fund (CRF) funds to other governments within their jurisdiction, as long as the funds are spent in accordance with the CARES Act and guidance issued by the Department. The Town of Hempstead received $133 million in CARES Act funding.
“Over the past several weeks, there has been a great deal of uncertainty and lack of clarity around how the federal CARES Act funding can be spent and to whom it can be allocated. I’m pleased that the Treasury Department has provided us with the guidance our communities need to move forward with this process,” said Rep. Rice. “While I continue to advocate for direct federal relief, local villages within the Town of Hempstead are in need of relief now, and they need to be reimbursed for these unforeseen expenses immediately. I would encourage the Town of Hempstead to work through these reimbursement requests expeditiously.”
