Nassau County Announces Free Spanish-Language Legal Info and Resources

Share

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced that Nassau County is partnering with the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association to connect Spanish speaking residents in need with bi-lingual volunteer attorneys. The announcement comes in response to an uptick in requests for assistance received by the Nassau County Office of Hispanic Affairs, ranging in topics from landlord-tenant disputes to immigration. Nassau residents can now call 516-572-0750 or email NCHispanicAffairs@nassaucountyny.gov to request information or resources. The Office of Hispanic Affairs will work with constituents to complete confidential intake forms, and the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association will then match constituents with bi-lingual member attorney volunteers.

This announcement comes after the County Executive’s recent announcement of a partnership with the Nassau County Bar Association to promote the availability of legal resources for people struggling from the impact of COVID-19.

“The goal of this partnership is to ensure that Spanish-speaking residents in need of legal information and resources can get it easily. We want to make sure residents know their rights, including their protection from any eviction for non-payment of rent through August 20. Help is also available for small business owners concerned about the re-opening process. I want to thank the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association for helping Nassau provide this vital public service,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran

As part of its mission to serve the community, Nassau County Office of Hispanic Affairs is notifying the public of the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association (LIHBA) and LIHBA’s willingness to provide legal information to the public on COVID-19-related issues. LIHBA is an independent association and not a County agency. Legal information will be provided solely by LIHBA and its members upon receipt by LIHBA of LIHBA’s intake form. The information provided by the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association, the Nassau County Office of Hispanic Affairs, and any person or individual who responds to an inquiry is solely informational. It does not constitute legal advice and no attorney-client relationship is established. The intake process and the consultation are all strictly confidential.

“The Long Island Hispanic Bar Association (LIHBA) understands that the Latino Community is being greatly affected in a myriad of ways by this Pandemic, so we have launched the Legal Information Program to provide relevant and accurate legal information, which is easily accessible, to the Latino Community during this time of crisis and uncertainty. We are deeply committed to ensuring that our community knows and understands its rights and can have access to information not just now but going forward,” said Hon. Linda K. Meijas, President of the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association.
