Suffolk Health and Hospital Officials to Put Long Island Town On a Diet to Combat COVID-19

Share

Today, May 6, Suffolk County Health Committee Chair Legislator William R. Spencer, M.D. and Huntington Clerk Andrew Raia will join Huntington Hospital’s Director of Bariatric Surgery Dr. David Buchin at a press conference to announce the first Town-wide diet for local residents.

The diet will include a healthy lifestyle and exercise program to combat the weight gain-nicknamed the “quarantine-15” that residents may have experienced during the pandemic lockdown.

Over a decade ago the Borough of Brooklyn put residents on a diet. The Town of Huntington, with over 200,000 residents, will be the first Long Island municipality to put residents on a diet. PLEASE NOTE: The program is voluntary.

The rate of obesity in the United State now exceeds 35% in nine states and these obesity-related conditions are very serious risk factors in COVID-19 cases. The initiative will work with local merchants who specialize in health and fitness, including a local fitness center.

The press conference will take place at 10:30 a.m. at 224 Wall Street, Huntington.
