Applied DNA to Track Down Feathers

Share

After providing DNAto mark and track a wide range of materials, Applied DNA Sciences Inc. said its technology is now being used to authenticate the origins of feathers and down.

The Stony Brook-based company said it reached a deal with Navarre, Spain-based Navarpluma that extends the use of SigNature DNA  to the global down and feather market.

Applied DNA marks raw materials with DNA, which can then be authenticated further down the supply chain, providing its source.

Navarpluma will be the first company to offer this new system to its down feather customers  as a way to indicate the origins of the produce.

Feathers are typically collected as unused materials in the food processing industry, before they are prepared for use as down.

Benjamin Dix, Navarpluma’s export manager, called the ability to trace origins a “competitive advantage” and “a new gold standard” for the industry

Tony Benson, a managing director at Applied DNA, said being able to track the  supply chain should attract new clients to Navarpluma.”

Nvarpluma  created the Duntrack system to be able to track and certify the place of origin as well as “ethical guarantees,” which that company called  a “point of differentiation.”

The company now  markets around 5,000 tons of  feather and down material per year to clients around the globe.
