Curran Hosts Virtual Kwanzaa Celebration at African American Museum

Share

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran recently hosted the County’s official Kwanzaa celebration at the African American Museum of Nassau County in Hempstead, NY. The virtual event, downsized due to COVID-19, consisted of remarks and reflections on the principles of Kwanzaa from County Executive Curran, Office of Minority Affairs Executive Director Lionel Chitty, and Office of Minority Affairs intern, Xavier Bermudez. After the speaking portion of the event, Bermudez lit the kinara as County Executive Curran marked each of the seven principles of Kwanzaa.

A centerpiece of African American history and culture on Long Island since 1970, the African American Museum of Nassau County offers a rotating series of exhibits showcasing local and national African-American artists. The African American Museum was granted the 2005 Museum Preservation Award by American Legacy magazine, one of only 10 museums to be honored for work done to preserve African-American history and culture.
