Members of the Nassau County Legislature Majority Caucus have introduced a new bill to bring greater transparency to Nassau County’s Planning Commission and provide residents with enhanced notification of the Commission’s actions.
The new legislation mandates the Nassau County Planning Commission, before taking a vote on any application, submit an agenda, that will be available on the county website. Further, the legislation states that the Planning Commission must establish and maintain an email notification system on the official Nassau County website, where individuals may request to be emailed the Planning Commission agendas for either specific meetings or for all meetings of the Planning Commission. These emails can be sent upon receipt of a request or at least one week prior to any meeting.
Additionally, the legislation requires that notices of public hearings be sent to all elected representatives of the town, village, city or Legislature where application or property in question is being considered by the Planning Commission. These must also be sent out at least one week prior to the scheduled meeting.
The Nassau County Planning Commission’s job to make recommendations concerning proposals related to zoning actions, subdivisions and variances.
“The Planning Commission plays an important role in the development of our communities. ” Nassau County Legislature Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello said. “ This new legislation will renew our commitment to bringing transparency to government and will help to keep residents and stakeholders informed.”
