Suffolk Federal Presents $37,650 in College Scholarships to Local Students to Alleviate Financial Burdens

Suffolk Federal presented a total of $37,650 in college scholarships ($6,275 each) to six local high-school seniors who will be attending Suffolk County Community College. “Supporting our younger generation on their education journey by lessening the financial burden on students and their families is a critical mission for Suffolk Federal. This is especially important this year in light of the recent COVID-19 pandemic,” explains Michele Dean, President & CEO of Suffolk Federal. “We acknowledge, honor and congratulate our talented and impressive scholarship recipients and celebrate their accomplishments. We hope our scholarships will enable them to grow and focus on their future educational and career goals,” she continued.

Scholarship award recipients were judged based upon their academic achievements, extracurricular and community activities as well as the quality of written essays.

The list of students who received scholarships include:

Suffolk Federal Scholarships:

The following four Suffolk Federal Scholarship award recipients each received a scholarship of $6,275:

  • Victoria Knotoff (Manorville)
  • Robert Gronenthal (East Patchogue)
  • Cheyenne Spillett (Medford)
  • Chase Fusaro (Sound Beach)

Michael E. Reilly Memorial Scholarship:

The following student received $6,275 as part of the Michael E. Reilly Foundation Memorial Scholarship for Excellence:

  • Emily Grieco (Bayport)

LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship:

The LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation award recipient received a $6,275 scholarship which was matched by Suffolk Federal for a total of $12,550. The award recipient was:

  • Nathaniel Polk (Bay Shore)

The scholarships are a result of an ongoing partnership between Suffolk Federal and the Suffolk County Community College Foundation.“The importance of giving to others can’t be understated and that’s because the secret to living is giving,” said Belinda Alvarez-Groneman, chairperson, Suffolk Community College Foundation. “I am thrilled that Suffolk Federal and the Suffolk Community College Foundation have partnered to recognize and support some of the most promising young people in Suffolk County with these generous scholarships.”

This year’s academic scholarship opportunities totaled $37,650, an increase from the $30,000 which were awarded by Suffolk Federal last year. “Suffolk Federal’s funding of these scholarships demonstrates, in a powerful way, their ongoing commitment to the young men and woman of Suffolk County and to the societal benefits that flow from an educated and trained workforce. So, thank you Suffolk Federal,” added Suffolk County Community College’s Interim President, Louis Petrizzo.

Added Sylvia A. Diaz, PhD, LMSW, executive director of the Suffolk Community College Foundation, “Today is a celebration of community excellence. Suffolk Federal shared incredibly generous scholarship opportunities for the students of Suffolk County Community College and awarding scholarships to promising students is one of our favorite things to do during the academic year.
