It’s a one-night stand – but then it’s by a one-of-a-kind comedian.
Robert Klein, the comedian, septuagenarian (a word that he could very easily fit into his act), and actor who went from Second City to a Grammy Award as well as theater and film is performing on Long Island on Thursday.
Klein is performing one night only at Governor’s Comedy Club in Levittown at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 in a show with tickets priced from $28 to $63 with a two drink minimum. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
“For more than forty years, Robert Klein has entertained audiences, and he continues to have an acclaimed career in comedy, on Broadway, on television, and in film,” according to the club.
Klein was born in the Bronx and became a member of the “Second City” comedy troupe in Chicago. Known as a comedian, actor and now author, Klein lives in Westchester and New York City.
He was nominated for Grammy Awards for “Best Comedy Album of the Year” for his albums “Child of the Fifties” and “Mind Over Matter.”
He also received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor, and won a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for “They’re Playing Our Song.”
Klein in 1975 became the first comedian to appear in a live concert on Home Box Office and has since done nine one-man shows for HBO and received his first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Music and Lyrics in 2001 for Robert Klein: “Child in His 50’s.”
He released “Robert Klein: The HBO Specials 1975-2005,” a collector’s DVD box set to critical acclaim. His most recent special for HBO, “Robert Klein: Unfair and Unbalanced” aired in 2010 and is available as a DVD. This special earned him a second Emmy nomination in 2011 for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.
In 1993, Klein won an Obie and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in Wendy Wasserstein’s, “The Sisters Rosensweig” by Heidi Wasserstein.
He co-starred in the NBC TV series “Sisters,” has a recurring guest-starring role on “Law and Order” and has recently guest starred on “The Good Wife” and “Royal Pains.” He has appeared more than 100 times on “The Tonight Show” and “Late Show with David Letterman.”
Klein has also appeared in movies including “Hooper,” “The Owl and the Pussycat,” “Primary Colors,” “People I Know,” “Two Weeks Notice,” “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” and “The Back-Up Plan” with Jennifer Lopez.
“The Amorous Busboy of Decatur Avenue,” published by Simon & Schuster, is his memoir about growing up in the ‘50s and ‘60s before embarking on a show business career.
