Iconic Pyramid House on Fire Island Lists For $6.5 Million

Share

It’s not just a summer home.

The legendary pyramid house on Fire Island is up for sale after changing hands back in 2018. Back then, Real Estate Agent Glenn Rice was visiting with a friend on Fire Island when he happened upon the home and fell in love. Luckily it was for sale and the deal was done, according to a story in the New York Times.

Rice, the Times says, didn’t just use the home at 443 Sail Walk as a summer residence. Sometimes he rented it on AirBnB and would stay there throughout the year enjoying views through the diamond shaped window of storms, sun, and winterscapes.

Rice, of Brown Harris Stevens, is now selling the home, asking $6.5 million.

Built in 1961 by Argentinian architect Julio Kaufman for a nephew of financier J.P. Morgan, the home was purchased in 2001 by celebrated playwright and screenwriter Paul Rudnick and his husband. The property changed hands again in 2011 bought by fashion and costume designer Jeff Mahshie. Rice then acquired the home in 2018.

The renovated 2,200-square-foot, three-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom architectural gem is winterized for year-round use and has multiple decks in the serene eastern section of The Pines, overlooking the protected dunescape of the Fire Island National Seashore, The Atlantic Ocean, and Bay.

Rice, who in addition to being a real estate agent is a furniture and art dealer/collector. The house is being sold fully furnished with the high end mid-century furnishings Rice purchased specifically for this property.

A pool, hot tub, and three smaller pyramids (two guest cabana bedrooms and a bathroom in between) across the pool deck, round out the 2006 high-end renovation by architect Hal Hayes to add the soaring wall of glass resulting in one of the most magnificent living rooms on the market anywhere, with miles of commanding views. Also added were completely new mechanical systems and galvanized steel structural beams for an industrial level of structural stability rarely seen on Fire Island.
