Stony Brook University Hospital and Stony Brook Southampton Hospital are two of only nine hospitals in New York State that have been acknowledged as Pediatric Innovators in the Always Ready for Children Pediatric Recognition Program and for having dedicated Emergency Department Pediatric Care Coordinators. They are the only two hospitals on Long Island to receive this recognition.

These services are provided by Stony Brook Children’s Hospital (SBCH), the leading children’s hospital on Long Island, with more than 180 pediatric specialists in 30 specialties delivering innovative and compassionate care, cutting-edge research, technological innovations, clinical trials and breakthrough techniques. The hospital is Suffolk County’s only Level 4 Regional Perinatal Center and Level 1 Regional Pediatric Trauma Center. SBCH offers a full range of medical services to support the physical, emotional and mental development of infants, children and young adults on Long Island.

Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Emergency Department is a Level 3 Trauma Center with a pediatric designated trauma/resuscitation room. All nurses are trained in Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Cases requiring specialized pediatric critical care or trauma services are prepared for transfer to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.
The Always Ready for Children (ARC) Pediatric Recognition Program is a collaborative project as a state and region-wide recognition system for emergency departments committed to improving their pediatric care. The program was created and is managed and maintained by the region’s Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) State Partnership Program, with support from the Health Resources and Services Administration and the EMSC Innovation and Improvement Center. Data collected by the National Pediatric Readiness Project shows that hospitals recognized as being “pediatric ready” by a recognition program scored higher on the National Pediatric Readiness Assessment (NPRA). The establishment of such recognition programs has demonstrated a decrease in pediatric mortality rates.
To achieve the Pediatric Innovator level, each hospital needed to participate in the National Pediatric Readiness Project; score above 80 in the readiness assessment; identify a pediatric emergency care coordinator, and share ARC best practices and resources.
