West Babylon Sailor Serves Aboard USS Indianapolis

Share

One of the phenomenal sailors onboard the USS Indianapolis (LCS 17) is Petty Officer 2nd Class John McCoy, a mineman.

As a mineman, the West Babylon, New York native is responsible for operating, maintaining, and managing the USS Indianapolis’ assets involved in mine warfare countermeasures, including the hunting and detection of mines, ultimately protecting the ship from mines.

Prior to joining the Navy, McCoy graduated from West Babylon High School and attended the State University of New York at Oswego.

McCoy’s favorite part about being a mineman in the LCS (Littoral Combat Ship) community is, “the different options afforded to [him], as [he]is able to learn different jobs [his]rate would not normally allow.”

LCS is a highly maneuverable, lethal and adaptable ship designed to support focused mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare, and surface warfare missions. LCS integrates new technology and capability to affordably support current and future mission capability from deep water to the littorals.
