Suffolk County Jails have stopped all visits to Long Island jails until the end of March due to the coronavirus.
Long Island Suffolk County jails receive approximately 250 visitors per day, which will be suspended because of the coronavirus.
“You really want to minimize any exposure to the staff and the inmates that are currently incarcerated in our facilities,” said Errol Toulon, Suffolk County Sheriff.
Banning visitors isn’t the only step that jails are taking to prevent the spread of COVID-19. New inmates coming into the Suffolk County jails will be separated from current inmates for fourteen (14) days.
“We are ensuring that we’re sanitizing our facility at least three times a day,” Toulon said. “We are encouraging our staff to wash their hands, do not touch their face.”
Toulon says the inmates understand why the precautions are necessary.
