Canon Expanding in Medical Imaging

Continuing to grow beyond cameras and copiers, Canon U.S.A. is expanding its presence in medical imagining, obtaining FDA approval for a device used in eye care.

The company, which acquired Toshiba Medical, is already a major player in health care. It just got a little bigger.

Melville-based Canon U.S.A. said its Xephilio OCT-A1 Optical Coherence Tomography device obtained FDA 510(k) clearance for sale in the United States.

Together with RX Capture software, a computer and LCD monitor, the device is used to obtain images of and measure the retina, retinal nerve fiber layer and optic disc.

The device, which can produce 70,000 scans per second, can also be used to help diagnose and manage retinal diseases.

“The system was “designed to help healthcare professionals capture high-resolution images and scans with ease and efficiency,” according to Tsuneo Imai, vice president and general manager of healthcare solutions at Canon U.S. A’s Business Information Communications Group.

The Xephilio OCT-A1 can be used in ophthalmology private practices, optometric schools, telehealth and by telemedicine primary care providers.
